Scholarship Overview

The Government of Canada provides several scholarship programs to help candidates from other countries who want to study, conduct research, or gain professional development in Canada for a limited time. The Canadian Government Scholarships office at the University of Alberta offers scholarships based on the length and level of study. The Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program, Canada-Asean Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development (SEED), and Study in Canada Scholarships are all part of the scholarship.

Eligibility

Eligible candidates must meet the following:

  • A written institutional collaboration and student exchange agreement or memorandum of understanding between the Canadian institution and the candidate's home institution is preferred but not required for undergraduate applications for a research-based experience. You will be required to provide a Letter of Invitation from the University of Alberta professor who has agreed to supervise you instead of an agreement.
  • An inter-institutional agreement is preferred but not required for graduate applications. Graduate applications involving a new or established collaboration between professors from a Canadian institution and the candidate's home institution will be accepted if there is no existing exchange agreement.
  • Candidates or their home institution should submit applications and required supporting documents directly to University of Alberta International via the electronic application form. Applications submitted directly through Momentum, the Government's scholarship portal, will be rejected. The University of Alberta International is in charge of submitting eligible applications received before our internal deadline via Momentum on behalf of the candidate.
  • At the time of application, student applicants must be enrolled full-time in their proposed degree program. For example, if the application period falls between the student's Master's and PhD enrollment, they will be ineligible for this year's scholarship. If this describes you, the CBIE suggests applying next year.
  • Scholarships are not transferable and are not renewable.
  • Candidates who have not previously received a scholarship through any Global Affairs Canada scholarship program will be given priority.
Scholarships are tax-free for both the Canadian institution and the scholarship recipient.
