Eligibility

To be eligible for the fellowship, candidates must:

  • Be a citizen and resident of a developing country.
  • Be pre-accepted to join a doctoral program in a university or research institution in a developing country or already enrolled in such a program.
  • Demonstrate a consistently good academic record and a serious interest in pursuing a career in mathematics research and teaching.
  • Students cannot apply directly for the fellowship; they must be nominated by a professional mathematician.

Application Instructions

To apply for the IMU Breakout Graduate Fellowship Program, nominators must:

  1. Register on the International Mathematical Union platform.
  2. Complete the online application form, providing detailed information about the nominee, the proposed study plan, and the expected impact of the fellowship.
  3. Prepare and upload the required documents in PDF format, including statements from the nominator, official letters of pre-acceptance, budget details, CVs of the PhD supervisor and the student, research project proposal, transcripts, letters of recommendation, and declarations from all parties involved.

The application window for the 2024 cohort opens no later than February 14, 2024, with all materials prepared and submitted online by the nominator.
