Scholarship Overview
The Africa Research Excellence Fund Fellowship Programme is now open to African medical students and/or graduates who want to further their research in Science. The Research Development Programme participants will benefit from a three to nine-month placement at a leading research institute in the UK, Europe, or Africa, as well as additional support in their home institution before and after the placement. A loan of up to £40,000 is available.
The Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF) Research Development Fellowship Programme aims to assist African researchers who are emerging leaders and working on important human health challenges in developing their research skills. Successful Fellowships can begin as early as June and as late as December.

The scholarship will cover the following:
- Accommodation
- Travel expenses
- Training costs
- Stipends
Eligibility
Candidates should be in their early stages of their careers. These are research-active post-doctoral scientists and clinicians with advanced degrees who are Sub-Saharan African nationals and work in the region (see detailed eligibility criteria on the official website).

Application Instructions.
- Applicants must complete the following
- Application Form PART A Summary Information (online form)
- Application Form Parts B-G
- A letter of support from the Host Sponsor
- A letter of support from the Employing Sponsor
- Two chosen publications to demonstrate the applicant’s career history.
- An electronic copy of the applicant’s most recently attained degree certificate, usually the PhD certificate.
- Application deadline is: 12 September 2024.
